What’s next for the insurance broking sector: the view from the investors
10:05 - 10:45
The broking sector has been heavily targeted and invested in by private equity over the last decade fuelling a boom in M&A in the UK and increasingly further afield. In this session we will hear from investors about what makes broking so attractive to them; what they look for when seeking brokers to invest in; and thoughts on what the future might hold for the sector in light of recent political and economic developments.
Peter Blanc ACII is Head of M&A, Howden Group Holdings. He is based at Howden’s head office at One Creechurch Place in London.
Heading up Howden’s mergers and acquisition strategy allows Peter to fulfil his ambition of making Howden the world’s leading independent (re)insurance broker, employee benefits advisor and MGA.
With over 100 acquisitions of insurance broking and MGA businesses during his career, Peter is an industry veteran with decades of experience behind him. Notably, after starting his career in motor underwriting and then building his own commercial insurance brokerage, Peter has led three successful private equity exit events, totalling over £1.5 billion. As CEO at Oval, he led the sale for £210m to Gallagher in 2014, and as Group CEO of Aston Lark, he led a round 1 sale for £325m in 2019 to Goldman Sachs and Aston Lark’s final exit to Howden for £1.1 billion in 2021.
Alongside these leadership roles, Peter has served as non-executive chairman of Hastings Insurance Services Ltd, as chairman of the Large Brokers’ Advisory Board at the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) and in 2022 he served as President of the Chartered Insurance Institute. Peter has recently been reappointed to the BIBA Large Broker’s Advisory Board.
Peter is a passionate advocate of expert-led insurance leadership, employee-owned businesses and the Early Careers Programme; in short, using his own experiences and expertise to help make a difference to those around him.
Peter lives in Colchester, Essex, where he is a proud husband and the father of three grown-up children. He can often be found keeping fit on a bicycle, going to the gym, or mucking out his daughter’s horses!
Andrea is a Partner and Head of Financial Services for Inflexion where he is responsible for leading the origination and execution of majority and minority investment opportunities in this sector across Europe.
Prior to joining Inflexion, Andrea spent twelve years at Cinven where he covered Financial Services. During his time at Cinven, Andrea invested in several businesses including Avolon, Eurovita, Guardian, Just, Viridium and True Potential. Andrea began his career at Citigroup where he worked in the Investment Banking division.
Andrea holds a cum laude degree in Economics and Business Administration from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan.
Charles is a principal at Aquiline. Prior to joining the firm in 2019, he was Head of Corporate Finance at Howden, a global (re)insurance intermediary headquartered in London. Charles previously worked at General Atlantic, where he focused on financial services and technology investments. He began his career as an investment banker at Barclays Capital.

Prior to joining AM Best, Graziano worked at NERA Economic Consulting’s energy practice, where he specialised in analysing energy markets to help quantify damages in international arbitration disputes.
Graziano is a CFA charter-holder, holds a master’s degree in economics from the University of St Andrews and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, politics, and economics from the University of Oxford. He is also pursuing a part-time degree in artificial intelligence from the University of Bath.

A) Bridging the gap
Sponsored by:
Increasing SME Cyber insurance penetration through broker-insurer collaboration
11:50 - 13:00
How can brokers and insurers work together to increase SME cyber insurance penetration? SMEs are frequent targets of cyber attacks, often struggling to recover from the aftermath. Despite the critical protection offered by stand-alone cyber insurance, penetration in this segment remains low.
In this insightful session, we will discuss:
- Why cyber risks can be particularly devastating for SMEs and how stand-alone cyber insurance can provide essential protection.
- Recent cyber incidents affecting clients – and the post-event consequences.
- The barriers brokers face when selling cyber insurance to SMEs and strategies for brokers and insurers to collaborate effectively to overcome these obstacles.
- What brokers want [and not want] from cyber products/services.

B) Remaining relevant
Sponsored by:
Our challenge should we choose to accept it…
11:50 - 13:00
This session will take a brief stroll through time, reflecting on brokers’ lived experiences, to consider the seminal moments of major market evolution, in a bid to identify what’s coming – or could come – next. What are the ‘must-dos’ for brokers, MGAs and insurers to stay relevant? Against a backdrop of those historic distribution game-changers, ‘tech’ transformers and the rise of regulation, what current threats do brokers believe could be turned into opportunities? How could addressing some of the big issues and dominant topics today help manage or mitigate others perceived as threats?
Discussion points include:
- Where and when could the next insurance inflection point come and how can brokers, MGAs and insurers ensure it brings more opportunity than threat?
- What can be learnt from those previous game-changers – in terms of the underlying challenges or flawed structures they were seeking to overcome or overturn?
- With many layers of industry tension between value and cost, what mainstays from the past 30 years are less relevant now in attracting and retaining tomorrow’s insurance buyers? And what is rising in relevancy that must be embraced?

Maximising the value of your data asset: Using data to cross sell products, better place business and manage your team
Data continues to be critical to the success and efficiency of any business, but it’s use and application in broking still presents a range of untapped opportunities. This session will look at how data forms the foundation of your business, and can be best used as an asset that can drive placement and cross-selling opportunities.

Perry McCarthy is quite simply unique.
He is an ex Formula One driver, a bestselling author and was the original secret racing driver from BBC’s Top Gear - 'The Stig'.
The means by which a racing driver can reach the pinnacle of Motor Sports is eased considerably if they hail from the ”right side of the tracks”… Perry was born in Stepney, East London - a place that has historically produced remarkably few successful racing drivers. Perry’s story is truly one of a kind.
Funding his early career by working on the Oil Rigs of the North Sea, Perry raced in Formula Ford, Formula 3, eventually F3000 and various sports car races in the US before testing for the Footwork Formula One team in 1991. His Formula One break however didn’t come until 1992 when he was signed by the independent Andrea Moda team. Ultimately the team’s efforts descended into something of a farce, yet (along with Perry’s battle to secure his FIA Super Licence in time) make for a tense but hugely entertaining chapter in Perry’s wonderful autobiography, “Flat Out, Flat Broke”.
Further tests for Williams and Benetton precipitated a brief retirement before a return to Sports Car Racing - including 5 appearances at Le Mans between 1996 and 2003.
In 2002 Perry released his autobiography entitled "Flat Out, Flat Broke" which went on to become an international bestseller.
Perry provided commentary on F1 races for the BBC in 2009 and now works as an ambassador and after-dinner speaker for corporations around the world. He combines his famous sense of humour and his experiences of rising to the top against the odds to entertain audiences worldwide with hilarious after dinner speeches or captivating business and motivational addresses.
